Global Gardens - help needed
Hi Idaho Growers,
This is Katie at Global Gardens in Boise. I run a program to train refugee farm entrepreneurs, and met most of you at the conference in Twin Falls this winter. We opened up a new incubator farm this year in Star, 22 acres with 12 families leasing one-acre plots, a mentor farmer farming 2 acres and assisting with the program, and a livestock area which is a new addition for us.
The whole thing is flood irrigated and I'm trying to scare up some additional siphon tubes, so that we can water more of the field at one time and minimize the cost of running our pump. If you've moved on to other kinds of irrigation systems and have some around that you're not using and would like to donate, we could really use them. Any size is ok, though 1 inch or larger would be the best. We can pick them up anywhere within a one hour radius of Boise, or maybe in the Twin area as I have plans to be down there for other reasons in the fairly near future, and we can give you a receipt for a tax deductible donation. Thanks to Lee Rice and Kera Whiting for already giving us a bunch, and to Beth Rasgorshek for donating a big load of plants!
We're also in search of a burro or a llama to act as a guard animal. We'll be raising sheep and goats for the moment, and hope to add chickens once we get a suitable structure built for them.
You can get more info about our program at our website, www.idahorefugees.org/home/Global_Gardens. We also have a facebook fan page if you want to get updates on what we're doing:
