About Us Twelve years ago my husband Jeff and I (Carol), along with our two young children, purchased ten acres of organic alfalfa land with dreams of sustainable and healthy living. We built our own house and have watched as the farm garden grew from a small plot to a one-acre fruitful business. We added two large greenhouses (thanks to a wonderful grant) and a partly enclosed tunnel. This has allowed us to grow things that normally would not succeed in the frost belt of Idaho. The children have grown up, flourishing as they learned to work hard and eat healthy food raised almost entirely at home. Jeff works long hours at school as the K-12th principal, and I now employ several friends and their own children to pass the joy on to another generation. I work part-time teaching during the winter and spring but spend my summer and fall out in the garden. Browse through our Products for Sale Ingredients All our produce is raised using organic methods, but we are not certified, being just a one acre garden. The breads are made with flour free of pesticides and also GMO free. I grind my own whole wheat flour for use in all my products. There is no mill in Idaho for white flour so that still needs to be sent out and brought back in.... The high quality mustard seed comes from an organic farm in Oregon. Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) Prairie Sun Farm was certified organic for 8 years. We decided to not continue certified, but to instead become "natural" and maintain the organic standard without the expense and paperwork that is geared for huge farms. We are committed to sustainability and wise stewardship of our land. I carefully plot out the beds each spring for companion planting and rotation. We fertilize the beds each fall with organic compost. The soil has rewarded our hard labors with greater fertility and fruitfulness each year. We use drip tapes to protect our water resources and waste as little as possible. Weeding is done by flaming and MUCH hand weeding. Weeding of the carrot beds is almost a full-time job! Additional Information Carol's major at SMSU was dietetics and nutrition. Growing up helping in the family garden was not always very appealing as a kid but eventually nurtured a love and understanding for the garden. These two backgrounds have worked together well. Highlights this Month June-the strawberries, apple trees and cherry tomato plants are in full-bloom. We are still threatened with frost on a regular basis so tender plants are covered each night. It is thrilling to see the beets, carrots and peas pop up overnight. Radishes and asparagus are in their season. I cut the asparagus each morning and if we are expecting frost I cut it again in the evening since frost will ruin the spears. |
