certified organic produce (fresh vegetables, dry beans, hay and grain), poultry, eggs, beef, plus natural pork (practically organic) About Us M&M Heath Farms is a family-run farm which has been cultivating Idaho soil for over 25 years. Headed up by Mike Heath, we started farming organically in 1982 and were certified in 1988. In 1990 M&M Heath Farms was one of the first to receive Idaho organic certification. Beginning with 180 acres of homestead farmland (Sunset Butte Organics) in Castleford, Idaho, Mike now farms close to 500 acres in the Buhl-Castleford area. M&M Heath Farms grows several heirloom varieties and has diverse types of potato and winter squash. We now have 16 varieties of potatoes (experimenting with different kinds each year), 10 varieties of winter squash, 14 kinds of tomatoes (including 7 heirloom varieties) and several types of summer squash, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, beets, swiss chard, herbs, onions, fresh beans, dry beans, sunflowers, hay and grain. We also raise organic beef, pork, chickens and other poultry, and eggs. We are also starting to produce our own organic seed and look forward to providing a local source to other growers. We went organic and stayed organic because we believe in its health and ecological benefits. We also believe organic farming is more environmentally AND economically sustainable. We are proud to be long-time members of the Wood River and Twin Falls farmer's markets and now Idaho's Bounty, as we believe in the importance of local food production and consumption. Browse through our Products for Sale Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) We practice sustainable agriculture utilizing organic methods, the primary of which is crop rotation. Rotating crops (such as alfalfa with legumes) naturally improves soil nutrition and nitrogen levels, which we supplement with organic compost. We manage pest and disease through rotation, companion planting, and biological controls (ladybugs are our friends!). We steward our land through conservation tillage, placing vegetative filter strips at the bottom of our fields, using sediment ponds, and planting cover crops. And because we farm organically, we can't help but take care of the land as organic practices like crop rotation inherently preserve and improve soil quality. We protect our water sources by conserving (we've gradually converted to sprinklers), growing cover crops to increase our soil's moisture retention, and rotating crops to balance early and late season growth thereby spreading out our water usage. And just by being organic we use less water: organic soils naturally contain more organic matter which means they need less water to keep wet! We also request notification when the canals are going to be affected by chemicals so that we can shut off our water supply and remain chemical-free. Our livestock live a good life, with plenty of room to move and a 100% vegetarian, organic diet which includes our home-grown, fresh veggies in the summer months (they eat as well as our customers do!). And our chickens are truly free-range; besides a roomy pen, they get to run around the open yard on a regular basis. We only vaccinate our cattle (no hormones, antibiotics, or steroids allowed) and they have the best health plan around...plenty of pasturing and exercise. Additional Information Thank you for shopping local and organic! Highlights this Month Wow, our chickens went fast! Sorry we're out but we'll have whole frozen organic chickens available again the last week in July. Be sure to watch for them! The weather is getting warmer so our lettuce plants are beginning to bolt. July 15-21 will be the last week to order lettuce from us. It's been a great seller for us this year, thanks to you! We now have PEAS! We have English Shell peas, Sweet snap peas and Snow peas available in 1lb. bags and 14-20lb. boxes for retail sale and whole sale. Get a box for freezing while they last! We are offering Organic wheat, corn and triticale for livestock feed. We still have a plethora of ground beef on sale for $5.50 a pound. The packages start at .89 - 1.05Lbs. Being grass fed, it is pretty lean beef and tastes great! The Potatoes are BACK!! These last two weeks of July we'll have new baby red potatoes and baby Yukon Golds fresh from the ground and ready to eat! We only have a small quantity of 2.5lb. bags on the retail sale list, we'll have boxes for whole sale in a couple weeks. |
