About Us
Blue Sage Farm, slightly off the beaten path in rural Lincoln County, is owned and operated by Laura and Paul Sluder and their children Jake (12)and Isabella (9). Our goal is to be not only sustainable but also regenerative. We believe a biologically balanced healthy soil makes for healthy plants, animals and humans. We call it the soil to stomach connection.

Our kids are actively involved in the farm. Jake has his own flock of ewes and a dairy hefier that he shows in 4-H. Isabella (Izzy) can be found gathering eggs or just carrying around her favorite chicken. She is also excited about getting started with rare breed poultry although she hasn't picked which breed yet!

Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
We are firm believers in utilizing Management Intensive Grazing (MiG) because it provides an avenue for farm enviornmental and economic sustainability. MiG uses high stock density, short duration grazing to manage forage production effiecency. Animal nutrient demand through the grazing season is balanced with forage supply and available forage is allocated based on animal requirements. Through the utilization of MiG the pastures stay in their most palatable state. The forages are left with enough residual and allowed adaquate time for regrowth to prevent overgrazing. The nutrients left by the animals are immediately used by growing forage and naturally recycled. Annual forages are planted to extend the grazing season and reduce winter hay feeding. When hay needs to be fed, it is delivered to the sheep by a team of draft horses. Stockpiled winter forages provide habitat for small wildlife, while reducing the farm's dependence on mechanically harvested feeds and fossil fuels. The ewes are only confined during lambing season to reduce predator loss. We have steadily increased our flock size without increasing land base or hay supplies and we don't have to rely on public range for grazing.

Additional Information
We are excited to add a dairy parlor to our farm this summer. This will enable us to milk the sheep. In keeping with the area's Basque history, and sheepherding in particular, we will be offering a Petit Basque style cheese in 2009.
