Quack Quiche About Us Morning Owl Farm is perched above the Boise River at the base of the the Boise Wildlife Management area's Hammer Flat. Ours is an 8-acre, family farm specializing in antibiotic- and chemical-free, pasture-raised duck eggs and certified organic produce. Since 2004, we've worked to create rich compost generated from vegetative and livestock residues created on-farm. In 2008, we are able to eliminate off-farm nutrient inputs entirely, and use our own compost to fertilize pastures and gardens. In 2011, we again brought on organic fertlizers to boost soil nitrogen. We hope, though, to find the right mix of cover crops, compost applications and crop rotations to eliminate these off-farm inputs altogeher. Time will tell . . . Our ducks are Golden 300s. In addition to pasture, they are raised on Dr. Jim Z's layer pellets milled in Meridian, ID. This feed contains no hormones or medications. The ducks are housed in barns at night for their own safety and let loose in the morning to spend the day foraging the pastures behind movable containment fencing. Our aim is to provide as stress-free an environment as possible for our ducks, and we think the proof of a ducky life is found in the taste of "the girls'" wonderful eggs. Highlights this Month 2011 has been a big and busy year at Morning Owl Farm. First, we built an 8' x 8' walk-in cooler that lowered our energy use for produce holding by nearly 15%. Next, we completed an 8' tall fence around the perimeter of our primary field, eliminating deer pressure on crops. Last, we installed two 26'X 48' high tunnels to extend our growing seasons in autumn and spring. Produce grown in these tunnels will be primarily distributed to our year-round Next Level CSA members. |

They eat an Idaho-milled feed and all the bugs, weeds, seeds and greens nature provides. They lay the best damn eggs you're ever going to eat. As we say, "Once you go quack, you never go back."
