Our 5.5 acre farm consists of an orchard, outdoor gardens and 4800 sq. ft. of geothermally heated greenhouses. We are now in our fourth year of production. In our greenhouses we grow directly in the soil, which we have been building on since the beginning; worm castings, local goat manure, and cover cropping during the summer months are a few of the things we apply in our greenhouse to ensure great tasting and vibrantly nutritious food. Our season starts in November and we usually finish up in June, right when the summer farmers are starting to come on with their produce. We are very lucky to have 130 degree artesian geothermal water which enables us to heat our greenhouse sustainably. We have excellent geothermal water rights which allows us the potential of having several greenhouses. We use filtered spring water for watering and for washing our vegetables. Onsen Farm's mission/vision is to create a permaculture based way of living using sustainable and ethical practices in raising healthy food for vibrant people. You are welcome to call us and make an appointment to come down for a visit. We are closed on Tuesday and Sunday. Note: {Onsen = Japanese healing hot springs} Browse through our Products for Sale Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) After testing our soil and then adding organic compost, worm castings, and other organic material we are happy with the results. Good nutrient rich soil creates good nutrient rich vegetables. We use only heirloom and organic seed on our farm. We also do some seed saving for the next seasons planting. Since we practice organic methods, we do not use pesticides or even soap sprays as they can kill the beneficial bugs. Growing greens in the winter months in a greenhouse makes for vulnerability of pests. We use beneficial insects to control aphids and whitefly. We will also be using homeopathics this year for the first time and are excited to see how that works out. |

Great in your salad, or make your own Arugula Pesto - 3 cups packed arugula (blanche for 15 seconds), 2 T. toasted pinenuts (or walnuts), 2 cloves minced garlic, salt, and 1 t. lemon juice; combine in a food processor and blend until smooth, add 1 cup olive oil while motor is running and parmesan or cheese substitute to taste.
